- Zwenkau, Saxony, Germany
- Eocene (~35 million years old)
This specimen of permineralized wood, originates from Zwenkau, Germany. The permineralization process has resulted in a remarkably detailed preservation, giving the petrified wood the appearance of being ready to be used as firewood. The sparkling effect in the photos is attributed to the presence of druzy quartz, which encrusts a significant portion of the wood.
It's worth noting that permineralization is just the initial phase of the petrification process. Despite its age of tens of millions of years, this wood has not entirely petrified. Additionally, the fossilized wood from this location typically showcases an exterior adorned with glimmering druzy quartz crystals.
Regrettably, the mine, the source of these specimens, is now submerged, and no new material has been discovered for quite some time.
