Carcharodontosaurus fossil tooth (3cm)
Nicely preserved dark enamel and serrations.
Only missing a small part near the tip.
Found in Tegana Formation, Morocco
This predator lived during the Cretaceous period around 70 to 100 million years ago.
Carcharodontosaurus was a large predatory dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. Its name translates to "shark-toothed," reflecting its characteristic sharp and serrated teeth, similar to those of modern-day sharks. Carcharodontosaurus belonged to the theropod group of dinosaurs, which includes famous predators like Tyrannosaurus rex.
Carcharodontosaurus was one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs, with estimates suggesting it reached lengths of up to 40 to 46 feet (12 to 14 meters) and weighed around 6 to 8 tons. It had a long, powerful tail, muscular hind limbs, and relatively short arms with three-fingered hands. Its head was large and filled with numerous, curved teeth, which were up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) long.
The teeth were blade-like, designed for slicing through flesh and tearing apart its prey. This dinosaur was an apex predator, likely preying on large herbivorous dinosaurs that shared its habitat.
Fossils of Carcharodontosaurus have been discovered in various parts of Northern Africa, including present-day Morocco, Algeria, and Niger. This indicates that it roamed a vast territory and was likely one of the top predators in its ecosystem.
Carcharodontosaurus shares some similarities with its more famous relative, Tyrannosaurus rex, although they lived in different regions and time periods. Both dinosaurs were large, carnivorous predators with imposing teeth, but Carcharodontosaurus had a longer skull and may have had a more slender build compared to the robust T. rex.
In summary, Carcharodontosaurus was a fearsome dinosaur, known for its impressive size, sharp teeth, and powerful predatory adaptations. Its existence provides us with valuable insights into the diverse range of large carnivorous dinosaurs that once roamed the ancient landscapes of the Late Cretaceous.
