Ouranosaurus nigeriensis was a unique and fascinating herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 125–110 million years ago. Its fossils have been primarily discovered in what is now Niger, Africa.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Reached lengths of about 7–8 meters (23–26 feet) and weighed around 4 tons.
  • Skull: Featured a long, flat skull with a beak-like mouth adapted for cropping vegetation.
  • Sail/Spine: Its most distinctive feature was the elongated neural spines on its back, forming a sail-like structure or hump.

As a herbivore, Ouranosaurus fed on a variety of plants. Its robust jaws and leaf-shaped teeth were well-suited for grinding tough vegetation. It likely lived near water sources, thriving in lush floodplain environments.

Sail Function Theories:

The purpose of the sail-like structure along its back remains debated:

  • Thermoregulation: Helping to regulate body temperature by dissipating or absorbing heat.
  • Display: Used for mating displays or to intimidate predators.
  • Energy Storage: If the spines supported a fatty hump, it could store nutrients.
