  • Paleocene (~64 million years old)

This is a genuine fossil of Echinocorys sulcatus a species of sea urchin from the Late Paleocene period (~64 million years ago). It was collected in the chalk deposits of Denmark, a classic locality well known for beautifully preserved echinoid fossils.

Echinocorys sulcatus is recognized by its oval, heart-shaped form and fine surface details that once protected the living animal on the seafloor. Their fossils are often referred to as “chalk urchins” due to the limestone beds in which they are found.
