  • Shell: +/- 5.50" = 14 cm
  • Apt, Luberon, France
  • Miocene Period (~18 million years old)

This impressive Gigantopecten fossil shell comes from the Miocene period (~15 million years ago) and was found near Apt in the Luberon region of southern France.

Gigantopecten belongs to the scallop family (Pectinidae), the same family that inspired the world-famous Shell logo. While the logo reflects the elegant lines of smaller Pecten species, Gigantopecten represents their giant relative: a large, heavy shell with bold ribbing and a striking fan shape.
